St.Arnaud is a lovely old heritage town on the edge of the Wimmera and exactly 110KM's West of Bendigo.
It was like Bendigo a gold mining area and in it's infancy was known as "New Bendigo"
As the gold declined it became a service area for the East Wimmera farmers and the local railhead for wheat shipments.
In the 1940's it was a large sawmilling area with firewood being cut and transported to Melbourne by train.
The town has declined in size over the years but still presents as a lovely area with many large buildings of the late 19th and early 20th century.
There is a small but very active Philatelic Society here and all Bendigo Philatelic Society members enjoy their annual visit.
